Do you realize that one of the Iowa Organization founders grew up in Council Bluffs? Although born in Maine, she moved with her parents here in 1883. She graduated from high school in 1902 and attended the Kindergarten Training School in C.B. then taught in city schools from 1908-17.
Isabel went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and her M.A. at Columbia University in N.Y. From 1928-31 she was instructor in the education dept. of Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. During the depression years, Miss Isabel was State Supervisor of Nursery Schools and Parent Education in the Emergency Education Program in Iowa supervised by State Superintended Agnew Samuelson. Two years later, she was appointed to the National Emergency Education Program of Nursery Schools and Parent Education in Washington, D.C. In this position, she worked with local and state groups in every state.
In 1948 she retired and returned to live in Council Bluffs. Isabel J. worked in the Dundee Book Store in Omaha and later owned and operated the Colonial Book Store in the Colonial Apts. In Omaha. She passed away at age ninety-three on January 15, 1976, at the Baptist Home in Omaha where she was residing. She is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
